How do I capture video footage from a DV tape in the MCAD library?

These instructions are for the DV cassette recorder equipped with an iMac in the Library.

*Please use headphones while capturing and exporting in the library!

  1. Power up the DV deck and insert you miniDV tape.
  2. If you are going to capture video to your personal FireWire hard drive, plug it into one of the FireWire ports on the back of the computer.
  3. Log into the iMac and launch Adobe Premiere Pro.
  4. Select New Project From the first window.
  5. Select the correct project settings in the New Project window:
    • Video Display Format: Time Code
    • Audio Display Format: Audio Samples
    • Capture Format: DV
  6. At the Location Pull down menu select Browse
    • Choose a folder on your FireWire drive or Temp_Storage drive to save your captured movies to. Do not capture to the Desktop or any other area on your Home Directory!
    • Click Choose.
  7. Click Scratch Disks at the top of the new project window.
    • Make sure all of the scratch disk drop down menus say: Same As Project
    • Click OK
  8. In the New Sequence window double click DV-NTSC
    • Select Standard 48Khz
    • At the bottom of the screen name your sequence.
    • Click OK
  9. Select File>Capture
  10. When a miniDV tape is inserted you will be prompted to name the tape.
    • Click OK
  11. Name your clip in the Clip Data window on the right
  12. Use the controls on the bottom left of the screen to play, pause, and stop the tape. In the Capture window you should now see a preview of the tape playing.
  13. Find a spot a few seconds before you want to begin capturing and press I on the keyboard for an out point.
  14. Find a spot a few seconds after the end of you clip and press O on the keyboard for an out point.
  15. Click the Capture button in Adobe Premiere Pro.
  16. Premiere will begin capturing footage.
  17. The footage file gets saved to the folder you set earlier as your capture scratch destination.
  18. Please power off the miniDV deck, DVD/VHS combo deck, and computer when complete.
