To the MCAD Community,

While it is impossible to comment on everything that is happening across in the US or across the globe these are some events that strike close to home and are adversely affecting people in our community, our country and beyond.

DACA and International Students

Last week marked the decision of the Trump administration to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA). If you know of anyone who will be affected by this decision please let Jen Zuccola or myself know. This is one of a number of set backs for students who seek education in the USwho are being penalized because their parents immigrated without proper documentation. Other decisions earlier this year have also resulted in numerous international students who no longer feel welcome in America not seeking to attend colleges and universities in the US.

MCAD supports and welcomes all DACA and international students as they bring a diverse perspective and enrich the lives of all our other students. This mean-spirited and short sighted set of decisions does not represent the values our country was founded on. Below are the words at the base of the Statue of Liberty which is a true statement of what America should represent.

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Hurricanes and Earthquakes

People who live in the Texas Gulf Coast region and Houston metropolitan area have suffered from devastating wind, rain and flood damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. There are people who have lost their lives, livelihoods, and property.

As Hurricane Irma tracked through the Carribean and hit Florida also producing significant damage and loss of life. And, there are two more potential hurricanes in the Atlantic.

Late last week we heard the news of an 8.1 earthquake off the coast of Mexico leading to more destruction and loss of lives.

As a result of these powerful natural forces there are people whose daily lives have been disrupted and for some, their lives and livelihoods have been irreparably harmed. If you are inclined to send funds or supplies to support those who have been affected by these disasters please find an organization you trust to get funds or supplies to the people in need. Our hopes for a speedy recovery go out to all of those affected including any of our MCAD community in those places or with relatives and friends in those places.

Transgender Military Personnel Ban

Another announcement earlier this summer by the Trump administration was a ban on transgender people serving in the military. Fortunately, senior members of the military and members of Congress spoke out against this move and it has for the time being been put on hold. It is one more instance of setting back a group of people who have every right to serve in the military as they do to all other rights of any American citizen.

The MCAD community supports actions that are inclusive of diverse points of view and the compassionate caring for others in need.
